Summary
Jennifer has represented private individuals as well as county agencies in family matters, child protection, and civil commitment litigation since 2014. As a certified student attorney at William Mitchell College of Law, she represented parents whose children had been removed from the home under circumstances such as chemical dependency and medical neglect. At the same time, she volunteered as a guardian ad litem (Court Appointed Special Advocate) in child protection cases in Hennepin County.Beginning in 2015, Jennifer clerked in a private practice family law firm and, after graduating early from law school and passing the Bar exam in February 2016, she became an Associate Attorney, continuing her work in child protection parental defense, while expanding into dissolution of marriage (divorce), custody, parenting time, and all the issues that accompany family law.Wanting to gain more courtroom experience, Jennifer formed JLT Law (Law Offices of Jennifer L. Thompson) in January 2017 and represented clients from as far away as Vermont whose family cases were venued in Minnesota counties. As a solo practitioner, she gained experience rapidly and appeared at every stage of litigation in family matters from initial case management conferences to trial.From May 2018 to June 2019, Jennifer represented Meeker County and its citizens in child protection, child support, truancy, civil commitment, guardianship/conservatorship, adult protection, juvenile delinquency, and DHS licensing matters. Building on this experience, she decided to re-launch JLT Law & Mediation in July 2019 with expanded practice areas and greater geographic coverage beyond the Metro area and into central and southern Minnesota.When not advocating for other families, Jennifer enjoys time with her own family fishing, gardening, and cooking at their home in central Minnesota.
