Barbara Ungar is a solo practitioner with 32 years experience and 21 years experience in private practice. She formerly served as an Assistant Essex County Counsel from 1988 through 1990 with expertise in mental health and hospital law. Ms. Ungar then served as a Deputy Attorney General with the Division of Criminal Justice from 1990 through 1999 with expertise in complex narcotics and environmental civil forfeiture and white collar, labor and fraud prosecutions. Ms. Ungar has extensive criminal defense, DWI, DUI, municipal court defense, family court litigation experience and appellate experience before the Appellate Division. She has been involved in the aggressive defense of high profile criminal cases featured in the media. Ms. Ungar was involved in the New Jersey Supreme Court case of State v. Denselbeck involving jury trial rights for third and subsequent DWI offenses. Ms. Ungar argued before the Appellate Division as counsel for the Defendant and the Appellate Division issued an unpublished decision of State v. Brian Gundy, affirming PTI admission for an individual charged with a gun offense. Ms. Ungar also argued before the Appellate Division as counsel for the Defendant and the Appellate Division issued an unpublished decision in State v. Joseph Blanc, remanding the issue of PTI admission back to the trial court. Ms. Ungar is the past Chair of the Municipal Court Practice Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association for two terms. Ms. Ungar is also the past Chair of the Criminal Law Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association. Ms. Ungar is the current trustee of the Women in the Profession Section and the Solo and Small Firm Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association. Ms. Ungar is a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the New Jersey State Bar Association and Middlesex County Bar Association where she remains active as a member of the bar.
